Battle of Lucena

Lucena, Córdoba, Spain

What happened

Boabdil besieged the town of Lucena. The Count of Cabra came to help from nearby Cabra. Outnumbered, the Granadan forces pulled back, and in the fighting outside the town their army broke and fled; Boabdil's horse got stuck in mud and he was captured.

Why it matters

Capturing the sultan's son was a major blow to Granada during the Granada War. Granada was also divided by a civil war at the time.

What came next

Boabdil was held in the castle tower of Porcuna, now called the Torre de Boabdil.

Did you know?

Boabdil's clothes, shoes and swords were later given to his captors and are now in the Army Museum in Toledo.
