Battle of Loudoun Hill
Loudoun Hill, East Ayrshire, Scotland, UK
What happened
Bruce chose a dry plain about 500 yards wide with deep bogs on both sides, and dug three ditches in front of his men. The English could only advance along a narrow road toward the Scottish spears. Their charge was stopped, the Scots pressed downhill, and the English broke.
Why it matters
It was Bruce's first major victory as king. It showed the value of choosing ground carefully against a stronger enemy.
What came next
Seven years later Bruce defeated Edward II at Bannockburn.
