Battle of Losecoat Field
Empingham, Rutland, England, UK
What happened
Rebels gathered near Stamford, and Edward's army took up position opposite them. When the rebels advanced, the royal army fired its cannons and charged. The rebels broke and fled before any serious fighting.
Why it matters
It crushed the Welles Uprising. Documents found afterwards showed that the Earl of Warwick and the Duke of Clarence were involved, and both had to flee England.
What came next
Warwick and Clarence went over to the Lancastrian side.
Did you know?
The story that fleeing rebels threw off their coats has no historical basis; the name probably comes from an Old English word for a pigsty cottage.
