Battle of Loigny–Poupry

Loigny-la-Bataille, Eure-et-Loir, France

What happened

During the Loire campaign, the two armies met along a front between the villages of Loigny, Lumeau and Poupry. About 35,000 German troops faced about 45,000 French. The Germans defeated the French Army of the Loire.

Why it matters

The German win protected their side while they prepared for new fighting along the Loire. It came just over three weeks after the French victory at Coulmiers.

What came next

The next day the Second Battle of Orléans began.

Did you know?

The village of Loigny is now called Loigny-la-Bataille, and a memorial chapel there remembers the battle.
