Battle of Łódź

Łódź, Poland

What happened

The Germans moved their 9th Army north by train to strike the Russian side near Łódź and cut it off from Warsaw. The attack stalled, and a German corps was itself surrounded for a time before breaking out at Brzeziny. In early December the Russians withdrew.

Why it matters

The Russians won on the battlefield, but Germany stopped a planned Russian invasion of Silesia. The Russians never again came so close to German soil.

What came next

Łódź came under German occupation on 6 December 1914, and the armies dug in along rivers for the winter.

Did you know?

The Germans moved the 9th Army north by running 80 trains every day.
