Battle of Lobositz

Lobositz (Lovosice), Czech Republic

What happened

Prussian troops marched into Bohemia through thick fog and found Austrian soldiers waiting, hidden in the landscape. The fighting went on across the nearby hills until sunset. That night Browne moved his army back to Budin.

Why it matters

Browne stopped the Prussian push into the Bohemian plain and kept open his planned route to help the trapped Saxon army. Frederick still claimed a win, because Browne had left the field.

What came next

The Saxon army at Pirna surrendered on 14 October 1756, and the Prussians left Bohemia by the end of the month.

Did you know?

After the battle, Prussian soldiers reportedly said the Austrians were 'no longer the same old Austrians.'
