Battle of Limburg

Limburg an der Lahn, Hesse, Germany

What happened

An Austrian army under Archduke Charles attacked a French army under Jean-Baptiste Jourdan. Charles attacked the French positions behind the Lahn River. Fighting around Limburg stalled, but a French commander on the right flank withdrew without orders. Jourdan's army then made a fighting retreat for several days.

Why it matters

It ended the French campaign in the north for that year. Jourdan pulled most of his army back across the Rhine.

What came next

Charles left a smaller force to watch Jourdan and turned south against Moreau's army, catching it at Emmendingen in October.

Did you know?

After a French general died of his wounds, the Austrians returned his body with gun salutes from both sides.
