Battle of Limanowa
Limanowa, Poland
What happened
Austro-Hungarian troops attacked in the Carpathian foothills southeast of Kraków. By 3 December they were advancing on Limanowa, and fighting went on around Limanowa and Łapanów through 10 December. Beaten along the line, the Russians were forced to retreat east, and the battle ended on 13 December.
Why it matters
It removed the Russian threat to Kraków. It was one of the last battles the Austro-Hungarian army won on its own; later victories depended on German help.
What came next
The Austro-Hungarians still could not reach besieged Przemyśl, which surrendered in March 1915.
Did you know?
Józef Piłsudski's 1st Brigade of the Polish Legions fought in the battle.
