Battle of Liegnitz (1760)
Liegnitz, Silesia
What happened
In the Seven Years' War, Laudon's Austrians attacked early in the morning, but Prussian hussars drove back their cavalry. An artillery duel followed, and the Prussian guns won. When the Austrian infantry attacked, a Prussian counterattack forced them to retreat before a larger Austrian army under Daun could join in.
Why it matters
Why it matters: The Prussian victory restored Prussian control of Lower Silesia. Daun arrived, learned of Laudon's defeat, and chose not to attack.
What came next
The war went on until the Treaty of Hubertusburg in 1763, which left Silesia with Prussia.
Did you know?
Prussian infantry charged Austrian cavalry with bayonets, a rare case of foot soldiers attacking horsemen.
