Battle of Langport
Langport, Somerset, England, UK
What happened
Goring held a ridge east of Langport with a rearguard to protect his baggage. Fairfax's musketeers cleared the hedges through marshy ground, and cavalry charged up a narrow lane. The Royalist cavalry broke, and Goring's army scattered.
Why it matters
It destroyed the last Royalist field army and badly hurt Royalist morale.
What came next
Bridgwater fell later that month, Bristol was stormed on 10 September, and the first civil war ended less than a year later.
Did you know?
Local 'clubmen', who had banded together against both armies, attacked many of the fleeing Royalists.
