Battle of Landshut (1809)

Landshut, Bavaria, Germany

What happened

Hiller tried to hold the town of Landshut on the Isar River so his supply wagons could get away. The French took the northern bridge, then broke through the gate of the southern bridge, and the town fell just after noon.

Why it matters

The Austrians lost guns, a bridging train and thousands of supply wagons. Hiller had to retreat.

What came next

The other part of the Austrian army was attacked at Eckmühl. Hiller later struck back at Neumarkt-Sankt Veit.

Did you know?

General Georges Mouton led his grenadiers across the bridge without letting them stop to fire.
