Battle of Landen
Landen and Neerwinden, Belgium
What happened
Luxembourg marched quickly to Landen and attacked William's entrenched army. The French assaulted the Allied right three times before breaking through. Most Allied troops crossed the Geete river in good order but left most of their guns behind.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was a French victory with heavy losses on both sides, but not the decisive win Louis XIV hoped would force peace. Some historians see it as a strategic gain for William, because he saved Liège.
What came next
William quickly rebuilt his army and retook Huy in 1694 and Namur in 1695. Luxembourg died in January 1695.
Did you know?
William is said to have cried 'Oh! That insolent nation!' as the French pressed forward under fire.
