Battle of Kulevicha

Kulevicha, Bulgaria

What happened

A Russian army under Hans Karl von Diebitsch fought an Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha. The Ottomans marched out of Shumla to help their troops besieged at Silistra. Diebitsch moved his main army to cut off their way home and force a battle. The Ottoman attack was stopped, and in the evening the Russians drove the Ottomans from the field.

Why it matters

It wrecked the Ottoman plan to relieve Silistra and stop the Russians in Bulgaria.

What came next

Diebitsch marched on toward Adrianople, and the war ended with the Treaty of Adrianople in September 1829.

Did you know?

The Russian commander, Diebitsch, was born in Germany.
