Battle of Krefeld

Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

What happened

Ferdinand pretended to attack one side of the French army, then marched round out of sight and struck the other side. Clermont was slow to send help, and the French withdrew in fairly good order.

Why it matters

Ferdinand's army had crossed the Rhine and was threatening France's border. After the win, Britain decided to send soldiers to join Ferdinand.

What came next

Clermont asked to be relieved and was replaced by Marshal de Contades. The first British troops joined Ferdinand on 21 August 1758.

Did you know?

No British soldiers fought at Krefeld, though some books say they did.
