Battle of Krabbendam
Krabbendam, North Holland, Netherlands
What happened
British troops had landed in North Holland in August 1799. Brune attacked their position before Russian and British reinforcements could arrive. The Batavian attacks failed, and a French division trying to get around the British was stopped by a canal and fire from British gunboats.
Why it matters
The British held their foothold in Holland. That let the Anglo-Russian army try to break out later.
What came next
The Anglo-Russian attack at Bergen on 19 September ended in a draw, and in October the Convention of Alkmaar let the invaders leave.
Did you know?
The dike at the centre of the fighting was an old sea dike, older than the drained land around it.
