Battle of Kozludzha

Kozludzha (now Suvorovo), Bulgaria

What happened

A Russian force under Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kamensky attacked a much larger Ottoman army under Abdürrezzak Pasha. When scouts found the Ottoman army, Suvorov attacked at once. The Russians advanced in four squares that beat off the Ottoman cavalry, while Russian cavalry got behind the Ottomans and took their guns. The Ottomans withdrew toward Shumla.

Why it matters

It made Suvorov's name as a brilliant commander. It was one of the main reasons the Ottomans signed the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca a month later.

What came next

The treaty ended the war and gave Russia two outlets to the Black Sea.

Did you know?

The village of Kozludzha is now called Suvorovo, after the Russian general.
