Battle of Kostiuchnówka
Kostiuchnówka, Ukraine
What happened
At the start of Russia's Brusilov Offensive, Russian troops attacked after a heavy bombardment. When Hungarian units nearby fell back, the Poles' flank was exposed, and their counterattacks could not hold the line. After three days the Polish forces were among the last to withdraw.
Why it matters
The Polish stand delayed the Russians long enough for other Austro-Hungarian units to retreat in good order. It is remembered as one of the biggest battles of the Polish Legions.
What came next
The Brusilov Offensive was only stopped in September 1916. The Central Powers later created a form of Polish state, but Piłsudski was arrested and the Legions disbanded.
Did you know?
Local places such as 'Polish Hill' and 'Piłsudski's Redoubt' were named after the fighting.
