Battle of Koronowo

Łąsko Wielkie, near Koronowo, Poland

What happened

Polish archers harassed the withdrawing Teutonic knights before the two armies met near Łąsko Wielkie. The fighting came in three rounds, with two truces in between. In the last round a Polish knight seized the Order's banner, and the Teutonic force broke and fled.

Why it matters

The chronicler Jan Długosz wrote that experts thought it more important than Grunwald. It was fought three months after the great Polish–Lithuanian victory at Grunwald.

What came next

The Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War went on; Küchmeister was captured.

Did you know?

During the truces, the knights of both sides cared for horses and wounded and shared wine like old friends.
