Battle of Komaki and Nagakute
Komaki and Nagakute, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
What happened
Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi fought Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobukatsu. Hideyoshi and Ieyasu had both served the warlord Oda Nobunaga, but in 1584 they came into conflict. Ieyasu fortified Mount Komaki, and the two armies built forts and faced each other for months. The biggest clash came at Nagakute, where Hideyoshi's raiding force was defeated, but neither side won the war outright.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was the only long conflict between Hideyoshi and Ieyasu. Some historians see it as a turning point in Ieyasu's rise.
What came next
Nobukatsu made a separate peace in November 1584, and Hideyoshi and Ieyasu made a truce in early 1585. They exchanged family members as hostages to seal it.
