Battle of Kloster Kampen
Kloster Kampen, Lower Rhine, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
What happened
The allies pushed the French out of the Kloster Kampen convent at night and took a canal bridge. At dawn de Castries rallied his troops and drove the allied infantry back across the canal. The allies then retreated to the Rhine.
Why it matters
The defeat disappointed Britain, which had expected better results. Some people questioned Ferdinand of Brunswick's leadership, though his army had been outnumbered.
What came next
The French did not follow the retreat. Ferdinand went on to win at Vellinghausen in July 1761.
Did you know?
When the allies reached the Rhine, their floating bridge had been swept away, and crossing took two days.
