Battle of Kaiserslautern (1793)

Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

What happened

Hoche's French army was trying to relieve the besieged fortress of Landau. Over three days the French attacked Brunswick's position near Kaiserslautern from several directions. The Coalition army held, and on the third day Hoche pulled back.

Why it matters

Why it matters: The Prussian and Saxon victory stopped this attempt to relieve Landau. Hoche had to change his plan.

What came next

Hoche turned against Wurmser's Austrian army in Alsace and beat it at Froeschwiller in December 1793.

Did you know?

When officials threatened to report his failure, Hoche sarcastically told them to write an order declaring victory.
