Battle of Issy
Issy-les-Moulineaux, Paris, France
What happened
After crossing the Seine, the Prussians reached the south side of Paris and took positions around Issy. Early on 3 July, the French attacked again and again for about four hours, but could not break through, and fell back toward Paris.
Why it matters
It was the French army's last attempt to defend Paris. After it, French commanders decided to surrender.
What came next
Paris surrendered under the Convention of St. Cloud. Napoleon, who had already abdicated, gave himself up to the British on 15 July.
Did you know?
Lazare Carnot later blamed Napoleon for not fortifying the south side of Paris.
