Battle of Inkovo
Near Rudnya, Russia
What happened
Matvei Platov's Cossacks fought French cavalry under Horace Sebastiani. Platov's Cossacks clashed with a French cavalry division near Inkovo and pushed it back, until French reinforcements drove them off. Platov never got the order cancelling the Russian advance, which had been called off after a false report.
Why it matters
The Russians gave up their planned offensive, so Napoleon could keep pressing toward Smolensk.
What came next
The Battle of Smolensk followed on 16–18 August.
Did you know?
The fight happened partly because orders went astray.
