Battle of Hubbardton
Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont, USA
What happened
The American rearguard under Seth Warner, Ebenezer Francis and Nathan Hale fought British and German troops under Simon Fraser and Friedrich Riedesel. After the Americans left Fort Ticonderoga, British troops caught up with their rearguard at Hubbardton. The fighting swung back and forth on Monument Hill for over an hour. When German reinforcements arrived, the Americans scattered.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was the only battle of the Revolution fought in Vermont. The main American army escaped and later helped win at Bennington and Saratoga.
