Battle of Hollabrunn (1809)

Hollabrunn, Lower Austria, Austria

What happened

After losing at Wagram, the Austrians were retreating north. Klenau made a stand near Hollabrunn to slow the French. Masséna attacked, but Klenau's counterattack held, and Masséna broke off to wait for more troops.

Why it matters

Masséna lost the fight but learned that the main Austrian army was heading for Bohemia. Napoleon needed that information to follow them.

What came next

The armies met again at Znaim on 10–11 July, and an armistice was signed on 12 July.

Did you know?

Klenau later received the Military Order of Maria Theresa for his rearguard fighting.
