Battle of Hohenlinden
Hohenlinden, Upper Bavaria, Germany, about 33 km east of Munich
What happened
A French army under General Jean Victor Moreau fought an Austrian and Bavarian army under the 18-year-old Archduke John of Austria. In December 1800 the Austrian and Bavarian army marched through snowy, thick forests in separate columns toward the French. Moreau waited in open ground near Hohenlinden and attacked each column as it came out of the trees. A French division struck the Austrians from the side, and their army broke and retreated.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It forced Austria to ask for an armistice and make peace. The Treaty of Lunéville gave France the left bank of the Rhine.
