Battle of Hexham
Hexham, Northumberland, England, UK
What happened
Weeks after defeating the Lancastrians at Hedgeley Moor, Montagu's troops crossed the River Tyne overnight and attacked at dawn near Hexham. One Lancastrian group fled before fighting began. The rest, trapped by the Devil's Water stream, broke and scattered.
Why it matters
It ended serious Lancastrian resistance in northern England. The Lancastrian leaders and their funds were gone.
What came next
The last northern castles fell later that year, and Henry VI was captured in July 1465.
Did you know?
Henry VI was later betrayed while hiding at Waddington Hall by a person remembered as 'a black monk of Addington'.
