Battle of Helsingborg

Helsingborg, Scania, Sweden

What happened

Denmark–Norway hoped to win back Scania, which it had lost to Sweden in 1658, and marched on Helsingborg. Stenbock's army attacked on the heights outside the city. A false rumour that the Swedes had surrounded the Danish flank caused it to collapse, and the Danes retreated into the town.

Why it matters

It was Denmark's last big attempt to recover the Scanian provinces. Scania stayed part of Sweden for good.

What came next

The Danish army left Scania. Stenbock became a national hero and was made a field marshal that May.

Did you know?

The Duke of Marlborough sent Stenbock his personal congratulations.
