Battle of Haslach-Jungingen
Ulm-Jungingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
What happened
Mack's army, nearly surrounded at Ulm, tried to break out. Dupont's small division chose to attack rather than retreat, and held out around the church at Jungingen. Mack hesitated, thinking the French were only an advance guard, and night ended the fighting.
Why it matters
Dupont's stand kept Mack's escape route to the east closed. It also started a quarrel between Marshals Ney and Murat over who had left Dupont exposed.
What came next
Mack tried again to break out at Elchingen on 14 October, but failed, and his army surrendered at Ulm.
Did you know?
Austrian dragoons captured the eagle standard of the French 15th Dragoons.
