Battle of Halberstadt
Halberstadt, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
What happened
After Austria agreed to an armistice, the Duke refused to stop fighting Napoleon and marched his small corps toward the North Sea. At Halberstadt a Westphalian force tried to stop him. The Brunswickers broke through three gates at dusk, and the last defenders surrendered early next morning.
Why it matters
It kept the Duke's march open. He was trying to reach the British, who were still fighting Napoleon.
What came next
The Brunswickers fought again at Ölper on 1 August, reached the coast, and sailed to England. They later fought in Spain and at Waterloo.
Did you know?
The Brunswickers' battle cry meant 'Victory or death!'
