Battle of Günzburg
Günzburg, Bavaria, Germany
What happened
Ney sent Jean-Pierre Malher's division to seize the bridges over the Danube at Günzburg. The first attacks failed, and the Austrians destroyed the bridges. Late in the day, French soldiers captured one bridge just after the Austrians had repaired it, and held it until evening.
Why it matters
With the bridges at Günzburg and Elchingen in French hands, Mack gave up his plan to cross the river. He pulled his army back to Ulm, where it was trapped.
What came next
Two days later the French fought at Haslach-Jungingen, and soon after, Mack's army surrendered at Ulm.
Did you know?
Mack later said he had been so busy writing orders that he did not hear the cannon fire.
