Battle of Grengam
Off Flisö, Åland Islands, Finland
What happened
The Swedish ships chased the Russian galleys into a narrow strait among the Åland islands. Two Swedish frigates ran aground, and four frigates were boarded and captured. Only the Swedish flagship got away.
Why it matters
Both sides claimed victory, but historians generally see it as an important Russian win. It ended big naval attacks by both sides in the Baltic.
What came next
The Russian fleet made one more raid on the Swedish coast in 1721, and then the Treaty of Nystad ended the Great Northern War.
Did you know?
A church dedicated to Saint Pantaleon, on whose feast day the battle was fought, was built in St Petersburg to mark the victory.
