Battle of Gonzales
Gonzales, Texas, USA
What happened
About 150 Texian settlers under John Henry Moore fought about 100 Mexican soldiers under Francisco de Castañeda. In 1831 the Mexican government had lent the settlers of Gonzales a small cannon for defence. In 1835 soldiers came to take it back, but the settlers refused. After a standoff, the Texians crossed the river at night, and after a brief exchange of fire at dawn the Mexican soldiers withdrew.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was the first battle of the Texas Revolution. It marked a clear break between the settlers and the Mexican government.

The Texians chose Stephen F. Austin as their commander and marched on San Antonio. By the end of 1835 they had driven Mexican troops out of Texas, though the war continued in 1836.
