Battle of Glen Trool

Loch Trool, Galloway, Scotland, UK

What happened

English soldiers advanced in single file along a narrow path called the 'Steps of Trool'. Bruce's men had loosened boulders on the slope above and sent them down, followed by arrows and close fighting. The narrow path stopped help arriving, and the English withdrew.

Why it matters

The victory greatly raised the spirits of Bruce's small army after its earlier defeats.

What came next

The next month Bruce beat Pembroke again at Loudoun Hill.

Did you know?

Bruce's Stone, a large granite boulder, was placed by Loch Trool in 1929 to mark where legend says he directed the ambush.
