Battle of Gefrees

Gefrees, Bavaria, Germany

What happened

Kienmayer was caught between two enemy forces. At Gefrees, his Austrians kept their line and fired steady volleys, while Junot's mostly new conscripts and cavalry could not break them. By evening most of the French infantry had pulled back.

Why it matters

Beating Junot freed Kienmayer to turn on Jérôme Bonaparte's army. It was the largest battle on the northern front of the war.

What came next

Kienmayer beat Jérôme at Hof on 11 July and took Saxony. But after Wagram, the Armistice of Znaim made Austria give up those gains.

Did you know?

Junot's army was mostly poorly trained conscripts.
