Battle of Galicia
Lviv (Lemberg), Ukraine
What happened
Conrad sent his armies north into Russian Poland, where they won early fights at Kraśnik and Komarów. Then the Russians counterattacked further east. The Austro-Hungarian armies were routed, and Russian troops captured the city of Lemberg, now Lviv, in September.
Why it matters
Austria-Hungary was forced out of most of Galicia and lost many of its trained officers. The defeat also forced Austria to pull troops from the Serbian front.
What came next
The Russians pushed into the Carpathians and besieged Przemyśl, but were driven back by the Gorlice–Tarnów offensive in 1915, when Lviv was retaken.
Did you know?
The victory at Lemberg helped soften the blow to Russian morale from the defeat at Tannenberg.
