Battle of Fort Frontenac
Kingston, Ontario, Canada
What happened
Bradstreet's men reached Lake Ontario, landed about a mile from the fort and fired on it for two days. Two French ships tried to escape but ran aground, and Noyan surrendered.
Why it matters
The fort was a key French supply base. Its capture cut one of the main supply routes between Montreal and France's western forts and raised British spirits after the defeat at Fort Carillon.
What came next
Bradstreet destroyed the fort rather than hold it. The French built a new base, Fort de La Présentation.
Did you know?
The French governor Vaudreuil had believed the British 'would not dare to enter Lake Ontario.'
