Battle of Focșani

Focșani, Vrancea, Romania

What happened

Russian troops under Alexander Suvorov and Austrian troops under Prince Josias of Coburg fought an Ottoman army under Osman Pasha. The Ottomans tried to strike the Austrians before the Russians could join them. Suvorov marched his men about 40 miles in 28 hours. The allies drove back Ottoman attacks from their camp, broke both Ottoman wings, and the Ottomans fled.

Why it matters

The allies drove the Ottomans out of Moldavia.

What came next

A new Ottoman army attacked in September, and Suvorov and Coburg beat it at Rymnik.

Did you know?

Suvorov arranged his infantry squares like a chessboard to resist cavalry charges.
