Battle of Eutaw Springs
Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, USA
What happened
An American army under Nathanael Greene fought a British force under Alexander Stewart. Greene's army advanced on the British camp at Eutaw Springs. Militia went in first, followed by lines of Continental soldiers, and the fighting centred on a brick house where the British regrouped. Greene ordered a retreat, and a day later Stewart pulled back toward Charleston.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was the last major battle in the Carolinas. The British held the field, but soon gave up most of their conquests in the South.
What came next
Congress awarded Greene a gold medal. The British kept only a few coastal towns such as Charleston and Savannah.
