Battle of Entzheim

Entzheim, near Strasbourg, France

What happened

A French army under Turenne attacked an Imperial army under Alexander von Bournonville. Turenne marched through the night and surprised the Imperial army at Entzheim. The French attacked a small wood again and again, slowed by rain and mud. They finally took it, and by dusk Bournonville ordered a retreat.

Why it matters

It stopped an Imperial invasion of eastern France. One historian called it a tactical draw but a strategic French victory.

What came next

Turenne rested his army, then made a winter march and won at Turckheim in January 1675.

Did you know?

A young John Churchill, later Duke of Marlborough, fought in the British Brigade on the French side.
