Battle of Emmendingen

Emmendingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

What happened

Moreau's French army was retreating through the Black Forest toward the Rhine, with the Austrians following. Heavy rain flooded the river Elz, and the steep, muddy ground made movement hard. Late in the day the Austrians threatened the French flank, and the French withdrew across the Elz, destroying the bridges.

Why it matters

The French could no longer cross the Rhine where they had planned. They had to keep retreating south.

What came next

A few days later the armies met again at Schliengen, and the Austrians won again.
