Battle of Dupplin Moor
Dupplin Moor, near Perth, Scotland, UK
What happened
Balliol's small army landed in Fife and marched on Perth. The much larger Scottish army crossed the River Earn to attack, but its packed ranks became jammed in a narrow valley. English men-at-arms held firm while longbowmen shot at the Scottish sides, and the Scots broke.
Why it matters
It was the first major battle of the Second War of Scottish Independence. According to historian Ranald Nicholson, Edward III reused its tactics at Halidon Hill and Crécy.
What came next
Balliol was crowned King of Scots at Scone on 24 September, but was ambushed at Annan in December and fled to England.
Did you know?
Several accounts say not a single English archer was killed.
