Battle of Dunkeld
Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland, UK
What happened
After their victory at Killiecrankie, the Jacobites marched on Dunkeld. The Cameronians, outnumbered more than four to one, defended the town from the cathedral and a nearby mansion. Narrow streets stopped the Highland charge, and after about sixteen hours the Jacobites withdrew.
Why it matters
The Scottish government had ordered the regiment to hold Dunkeld at all costs. Its stand stopped the Jacobite advance after Killiecrankie.
What came next
The Jacobite rising in Scotland ended the next year after the Battle of Cromdale.
Did you know?
Cleland was buried in Dunkeld Cathedral.
