Battle of Doiran (1918)

Lake Dojran, North Macedonia

What happened

British and Greek troops attacked the Bulgarian positions on Pip Ridge near Lake Doiran. They took the first trench line, but Bulgarian guns and counterattacks won it back. A second attack the next day also failed.

Why it matters

The Bulgarians held, but the Allied breakthrough at Dobro Pole to the west threatened to cut them off, so they retreated. Bulgaria soon asked for peace.

What came next

Bulgaria signed the Armistice of Salonica on 29 September 1918, and fighting on the Macedonian front stopped the next day.

Did you know?

In 1936 Vazov visited London, and British regiments that had fought at Doiran lowered their flags in his honour.
