Battle of Dinwiddie Court House
Dinwiddie County, Virginia, USA
What happened
Grant was trying to cut the last supply lines into Petersburg and Richmond. Pickett's men attacked Sheridan's cavalry and pushed it back toward the village, but Union reinforcements under George Armstrong Custer arrived and the line held at nightfall.
Why it matters
It stretched Lee's thin defences even further. Sheridan's force stayed in place, ready for the next day.
What came next
Pickett pulled back to Five Forks, where the armies fought the next day. Lee surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.
Did you know?
Sheridan told an officer 'This force is in more danger than I am.'
