Battle of Curzola
Korčula Channel, Croatia
What happened
The fleets met in the channel between the island of Curzola (Korčula) and the Pelješac peninsula. The Venetians ran several galleys aground while trying to capture Genoese ships. Doria used better tactics and won a decisive victory.
Why it matters
It was a major blow to Venice in the long wars between Genoa, Venice and Pisa over Mediterranean trade.
What came next
Venice quickly fitted out another 100 galleys and sought peace on terms that would not weaken it much.
Did you know?
A later tradition says Marco Polo was captured here and dictated his famous book in a Genoese prison, but some historians think he was captured in an earlier skirmish.
