Battle of Concepción
Mission Concepción, San Antonio, Texas, USA
What happened
At the start of the Texas Revolution, Bowie and Fannin led a scouting party that camped near Mission Concepción, outside Béxar (San Antonio). Ugartechea's troops attacked at dawn. The Texians took cover in a horseshoe-shaped bend of the river and drove back several attacks, and after about 30 minutes the Mexican troops withdrew.
Why it matters
Why it matters: Historian J. R. Edmondson calls it the first major engagement of the Texas Revolution. It was also the last attack that the Mexican commander Cos ordered against the Texians.
What came next
The main Texian army arrived soon after and moved on to besiege Béxar. Cos agreed to surrender the town in December 1835.
Did you know?
A Mexican bullet hit a knife tucked in one Texian's belt, leaving him with only bruises.
