Battle of Chippawa

Chippawa, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

What happened

The American army of Major General Jacob Brown, with Brigadier General Winfield Scott's brigade, fought the British division of Major General Phineas Riall. During the War of 1812, the Americans captured Fort Erie and marched north along the Niagara River. Riall crossed Chippawa Creek to attack them on a plain south of the village. After about 25 minutes of firing, Riall ordered a withdrawal.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It showed that trained American regular soldiers could stand up to British regulars. American marksmanship was one of the deciding factors.

What came next

The British fell back to Fort George. A few weeks later the two armies met again at the Battle of Lundy's Lane.

Did you know?

A story says the grey parade uniforms of West Point cadets honour Scott's grey-clad troops at Chippawa, but this appears to be a legend.
