Battle of Chickasaw Bayou
Chickasaw Bayou, Warren County, Mississippi, USA
What happened
As part of Grant's first attempt on Vicksburg, Sherman landed his divisions near the Yazoo River north of the city. His troops struggled through swamps toward the Walnut Hills. After attempts to go around the defences failed, Sherman ordered a direct attack on 29 December, which was driven back.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was a Confederate victory. Together with a Confederate raid on Holly Springs, it stopped Grant's first direct attempt to take Vicksburg.
What came next
Sherman withdrew and joined an expedition against Arkansas Post in January 1863. Vicksburg finally surrendered on 4 July 1863.
