Battle of Château-Thierry

Château-Thierry, Aisne, France

What happened

The day after beating them at Montmirail, Napoleon's troops chased the Prussian and Russian corps to the river Marne. French cavalry and infantry pressed their rearguard, and a Prussian group was cut off when a bridge was destroyed. The two corps crossed the Marne and escaped.

Why it matters

It was the third win of the Six Days' Campaign, when Napoleon beat parts of Blücher's army one after another. But he did not destroy the two corps.

What came next

Blücher advanced again, and Napoleon beat him at Vauchamps on 14 February. The Allies still went on to take Paris.

Did you know?

The French had no bridging equipment, so rebuilding the bridge at Château-Thierry took a whole day.
